TIM CONLEY 2024
DIRECTOR
TIM CONLEY
Tim was born in Saginaw, Michigan in 1957. He grew up in the community of Carrollton, Michigan, playing many sports in his early years. This led to his passion and commitment to playing basketball for three years while attending Carrollton High School. While attending Central Michigan University (CMU) he would come home on his breaks and volunteer his time at Handley Elementary School with the after school programs. During this time he was introduced to teacher and coach Virgil Noble. Coach Noble was a great mentor who led Tim to be interested in coaching basketball.
In 1981, Tim graduated from Central Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science in Education. He moved to Houston, Texas to work as a teacher and basketball coach for the Houston Independent School District. He returned to Saginaw in 1983 for a teaching position with Saginaw Township Community Schools. During the first few months he learned of an opening for a freshman boys basketball coach at Eisenhower High School. Tim eagerly accepted this role and the support from Terry Boswell, Eisenhower Boys Varsity Basketball Coach. In 1987, Tim accepted another coaching position with the freshman girls basketball program with the support of Mike Donahue, Heritage Girls Varsity Basketball Coach. During this coaching phase Tim compiled a record of 137-28.
In 1992, Tim accepted the position of Heritage High School Girls Varsity Basketball Coach, once Coach Donahue retired. The new role, requiring hard work and long hours, was the dream of a lifetime. Over the years, as Coach Conley reminded his athletes “the game is only 32-minutes but the memory will last for a lifetime.” Coach Conley led a successful program, achieving five district championships, four regional championships, and an undefeated season to the state quarterfinals, leaving the Class A team with a 25-1 record in 2000. Without pause, the program surpassed their new school record and made their first Class A state finals appearance in 2001. After experiencing a bittersweet state finals appearance in 2001, Conley led the program to “the big dance” where they were crowned Class A State Champions in 2002.
Coach Conley’s string of successes left him lauded as White Pine Conference Coach of the Year in 1992, Saginaw Valley League Coach of the Year for 2000, 2001, 2002, Saginaw News Coach of the Year in 1999, 2001, 2003, and 2013 and Associated Press Michigan High School Coach of the Year in 2002. The Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM) awarded him as the Region 3 Coach of the Year 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, Class A Girls State Coach of the Year in 2001 and Class A Girls Overall State Coach of the Year in 2003. Awards aside, one of his greatest achievements was watching twenty-five girls from Heritage’s program continue to play collegiate sports.
In addition to leading one of the most elite and tenacious girls basketball programs in the area, Coach Conley dedicated his time and talents as he served as a representative for BCAM on the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Rules Committee, a BCAM Mentor for Coaches, served a term as the President for BCAM and partnered with MHSAA to develop and implement a statewide recruiting event as the Director of BCAM’s Reaching Higher Girls Showcase program.
Tim recognizes the breadth and depth of the memorable experiences shared with many student athletes, parents, officials, administrators and community members that have contributed to the success of his educational and coaching careers. In 2013, Tim retired from coaching, with a record of 291-201, however he continues to mentor other basketball coaches in Michigan. After 41 years of service in the education field, Tim decided to retire from Saginaw Township Community Schools in 2022, to spend time traveling, golfing, boating, and enjoying time with his wife Lori, son Eric, daughter Katlin and their families.
