Art Pelzer had a long and stellar coaching career at Frankenmuth High School, a career that spanned 27 years. He served one year as girl’s softball coach, two years as boy’s freshman basketball coach, nine years as junior varsity football coach, 10 years as boy’s junior varsity basketball coach (141-33 record), and 20 years as boy’s varsity track and field coach where he won 14 conference titles and four regional crowns. But Pelzer is best known as head coach for Frankenmuth’s girl’s varsity basketball team. He initially coached the Frankenmuth junior varsity girl’s squad for two years where his teams were a perfect 35-0. Pelzer then coached the varsity squad for 19 years (1975-1993) and compiled a phenomenal 432-44 record (.906 winning percentage), becoming the first girl’s coach in the state to collect 400 victories. Along the way Frankenmuth won 16 league crowns, 15 district championships, 10 regional titles, eight final four appearances, four state runner-up finishes and a state championship in 1992.
Pelzer was named Class B Coach of the Year three times and was the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan Coach of the Year in 1992. He was elected to the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan Hall of Fame in 1997.
