1999 ST. CHARLES STATE CHAMPION FOOTBALL TEAM
Led by head coach Bob Welzein, the St. Charles varsity football team was undefeated in 1999 going 9-0 during the regular season and 14-0 overall, ultimately capturing the Division 6 state championship. The Bulldogs were the first team in Michigan High School football history to go 14-0 in a season and did so playing with only 19 varsity players. St. Charles blanked Ithaca 14-0 in the season opener, which would become the closest any team would come in scoring during the regular season. The Bulldogs then toppled Hemlock (57-8); Merrill (60-17), Swan Valley (28-0), Michigan Lutheran Seminary (36-6), Freeland (35-0), Bullock Creek (42-6), Carrollton (60-8) and Birch Run (41-11) in order through the regular season. St Charles would go up against Freeland in the District Semifinal coming away with a 49-7 win. The Bulldogs knocked off Unionville-Sebewaing Area 36-16 in the District Championship contest before throttling Carson City-Crystal 41-12 in Quarterfinal play. In the Semifinals, St. Charles battered Gwinn in the Upper Peninsula, 40-12, before tripping up Hopkins 21-14 in the state championship game.Team members included Scott Wicke, Mike Reinke, Keith Dombrowski, Jared Duquette, Jake Wood, Andreas Heister, Sean Gustavison, Patrick Mishler, Brian Mead, Seth McKillop, Adam Turner, Ed Tithof, Tom Kremer, Brandon Revell, Jason Dinninger, Ryan Griffus, J.J. Goidosik, Eric Rehmann and Josh Hafner. Assistant coaches included Jim Mroz, Pat Rusz, Larry Mishler, Roger Henninger, Roger Delemeester, Bill Wood and Jim Swartzendruber.
