RON VONDETTE

Ron Vondette began his storied basketball coaching career in Carrollton in 1960 at the junior high level. In 1965 he was named the varsity coach at the high school and held that position until 1994 (27 years). Along the way he racked up an impressive 425-164 record, 20 league championships, seven district titles, four regional titles, and his 1969-70 Cavalier team was the Class B runner-up, losing the final championship game to River Rouge. Vondette, who also coached golf, girl’s basketball and softball at Carrollton, would go on to coach men’s basketball at Delta College for five years where he was 72-63 with one league championship and one state championship runner-up finish.
He was the first director and co-founder of the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan and was an Executive Director of the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan for 20 years. He was an excellent fastpitch softball pitcher and also played recreation basketball and football. Vondette, who conducted a number of All-American basketball camps, was inducted into the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan’s Hall of Fame in 1990.
