Donald Durrett

Donald Durrett played football, basketball and baseball at Flint Northern High School. After graduation, he attended Albion College where he played football and ran track. In 1976 and 1977 Durett was part of Albion College football team’s MIAA Championship wins. Two teams that would later see him inducted into the Albion College Athletic Hall of Fame on October 7, 1994 and again on September 30, 2005 for the 1976 and 1977 teams respectively.

When his time at Albion came to an end Durrett’s athletic pursuits continued. He returned to Flint Northern where he coached Junior and Varsity Football, as well as girls track from 1981 to 1984. During this time Durret helped lead the Girls track team to a city, valley and regional, and then Class A state championship in 1983 and finished fifth in state in 1984. Along with coaching at Flint Northern during this time Durret also was a track coach for Flint Canusa from 1979 to 1983.

His tenure as a coach at Flint Northern led to the collection of many accolades. Accolades, such as his 1981 Girls track team being named to the Greater Area Sports Hall of Fame and Durret himself being named to the Flint African Sports Hall of Fame for Multiple Sports/Coaching on February 24 of 2008.

In 1985, Durret made the jump to Saginaw High School where he coached football as the Defensive Coordinator under George Genyk and was the Head Girls Track Coach. Then in 1991 Durret became the head coach for the Saginaw High School football team. While as the head coach Durret achieved:

• Regional Coach of the Year seven times (1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 & 2002).

• Saginaw Valley Coach of the Year six times (1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000 & 2001)

• Two Time State of Michigan Detroit Lions Coach of the Year in 1997 & 1999

• Third Annual Detroit Lions Coach Bobby Ross Football Award at Saginaw Valley 2000 and

• Led the team to become Division 2 State Champs in 1999.

After 13 years as Head Coach of Saginaw High School, Durret decided to retire with an impressive record of 91-37 and the most wins in Saginaw High School Football History.
