Greg Meter
In his Junior year of high school Greg Meter transferred to St. Stephens and started a ride that
skyrocketed his athletic career. During his junior year for football, Meter was named to the First Team All-State Team for football as a WR/DB and was second in the area in scoring with 13 TD receptions, 1 rushing TD, and nine 2pt pass receptions. His total yards gained that year was over 1200 yards,
including returns. The accomplishments didn’t stop there. Moving on to his senior year, Meter was named once again to the First Team All-State, but this time as an RB/DB. For his senior season he averaged 9.2
yards rushing with 13 rushing TD’s, 1 receiving TD, and 1 passing TD. Meter improved on his total years achieving 1500, including returns.
Over his football career at St. Stephens, Meter compiled 12 career pass interceptions and led St. Stephens to its only undefeated football season in 1970 and the tope of the Class B team in the area, finishing third in the state. He didn’t just excel on the gridiron though. Meter also lettered in Basketball
and Track and received All-State Honorable Mention in Basketball twice. On the Track he was a two time State qualifier and medaled once. After High School, Meter moved on to attend, then a D1 school, the University of Dayton on a football scholarship. He played all four years and was a starter for his junior and senior years, with his leadership abilities being noticed, as he was named Team Captain for his senior year.
During his senior season at the University of Dayton, Meter averaged 7.1 tackles per game and led the team with 5 interceptions. He was eventually awarded the Lt. Andy Zulli Trophy, regarded as the most prestigious award in the University of Dayton Football program and awarded to the Flyer senior
who best exemplifies the qualities of Zulli, a former UD football player who was killed in a military vehicle accident while serving in the Army in Germany shortly after his graduation in 1954. The awards didn’t stop there, as he also earned the MacBeth Scholar-Athlete Award, which is presented annually to a student athlete at the University of Dayton who demonstrates academic and athletic excellence. He later accepted an Academic Fellowship From Dayton and completed his Master’s Degree in 1976. After college Meter continued his football journey by returning back to his high school team, becoming an Assistant Coach at St. Stephens for two years. He then later became an Assistant Coach at Nouvel Catholic Central for
36 years that was nothing short of historic. During his time at Nouvel, he piloted the team to three state championships, three state runner-ups, 5 state semifinals, 10 regional titles, and 16 district titles.
In 2022, Meter was selected as Assistant Coach of the Year by the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association (MHSFCA) and inducted into the MHSFCA Hall of Fame in 2024.
