ART MCCOLGAN

Born October 16, 1930, Art McColgan was a talented three-sport athlete for SS. Peter & Paul High School where he was the school’s first-ever all-state selection. McColgan played football, basketball and baseball for the Midgets. The 6-1, 190 pounder played in three consecutive state championship basketball games and helped SSPP win the state title in 1947. He was named to the “one-team” all-state squad in 1947, a team selected from all four classes. In 1948 he was named to the all-Valley Parochial League team as the only unanimous choice. The St. Pete’s center and team captain scored 40 points on several occasions and once scored 49 points in a game. McColgan led his team to a 74-2 record in his three varsity seasons – including 52 consecutive victories – while scoring 1,443 points during his stellar cage career. During his senior year, when he scored 548 points in 26 games, he was named all-state by the Detroit Times and Detroit News. McColgan was the Midgets leading scorer in every game during his four years at St. Pete’s. He was also a four-year starter on the football team playing quarterback, halfback and end. He was all-Valley and all-state two seasons and named team captain. During the one season he played baseball he tossed a no-hitter. He attended Michigan State College on a basketball scholarship and earned a freshman letter. He then transferred to Villanova University and played two years. McColgan then continued his dedication to sports as he was a highly-respected athletic official in the Saginaw area. He was a basketball and football official for over 25 years, including officiating several state championship and college contests. He died May 27, 1980, at the age of 49.
