CARL “CAP” POHLMAN

Cap Pohlman was an outstanding basketball and baseball player at Douglas MacArthur High School. He excelled in baseball as a nearly untouchable left-handed hurler during his three years on the varsity, and helping lead the Generals to three consecutive White Pine Conference titles. When he graduated in 1970, he chalked up 21 career victories – a county record at the time – with seven no-hitters. Pohlman pitched for Means Stamping in the Connie Mack and City Baseball Federation Leagues where he was named MVP in 1971. He received a scholarship to Central Michigan University, where he became the first freshman to play on the baseball team when he was brought up to the varsity at the end of the season and for the tournament run. His four-year career at CMU was highlighted by tossing a no-hitter against South Carolina, and defeating Big Ten champion Iowa on a three-hitter. He is in the Central Michigan University Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the 1971 Division II national runner-up where he was named to the All-Tournament team. CMU, which compiled a 35-7-1 record, finished the regular season with a No. 1 ranking – the only team in school history to ever hold the country’s top ranking. In 1972 and ’73, he played in the prestigious Cape Cod League. Pohlman recorded an 8-2 record his senior season and was drafted in the 9th round of the Major League draft by the Milwaukee Brewers. He spent two years in Triple-A before his career was cut short because of an arm injury. Pohlman was a volunteer assistant coach at CMU before accepting his first high school head baseball coaching position at Chesaning High School, where his teams won seven conference championships in 13 years. His best team was 32-7. Pohlman then worked four years as assistant baseball coach at Miami (Ohio) University, primarily working with pitchers. He then coached baseball for four years at Fruitport High School, where his teams won three conference championships. His prep head coaching record is 351-145 (70.7 winning percentage) in 17 seasons. Pohlman moved on to the head coaching position at Muskegon Community College, where he had tremendous success. His teams made the regional tournament 12 times, and Pohlman’s 2009-10 squad broke 21 school records including a record 44 wins. His career record at MCC is an outstanding 528-319, and the Jayhawks had just one losing season. Pohlman currently is the associate baseball coach at Aquinas College. In 2002, he was inducted into the Michigan Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame
